Whitfield earns silver at ACC Championships

Whitfield tied for second place in the 50 free on day two of ACC Championships.

ATLANTA– ACC Championships are off to a strong start for the Hokies, with Brendan Whitfield taking home a silver medal and four new school records being posted. Wednesday evening marked the team’s first podium appearance when Brendan Whitfield logged an 18.71 in the 50 free, tying for second place. 

Whitfield set the school record in the 50 free earlier Wednesday morning in prelims, touching the wall in just 18.62 seconds. His domination in the freestyle was highlighted by a new school record in the 200 free as the leadoff leg of the 800 free relay, logging a 1:31.62 Tuesday night. Thursday night, he took home fifth-place in the 200 free event with a 1:31.84. 

Carmen Weiler Sastre etched her name in the record book as well, posting a 1:42.73 200 free swim to lead off the women’s 800 free relay Tuesday night. Weiler Sastre’s success continued as she logged a fifth-place finish in the 200 free Thursday night, swimming a 1:43.14. 

The men’s 200 free relay also posted a school record Wednesday night, notching a 1:15.00. Freshmen Diego Aranda and Javier Nuñez contributed to the fourth-place finish, alongside junior Whitfield and senior Tanish George Mathew
