CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 14/16 Virginia Tech defeated Villanova, 7-3, and fell to Charlotte, 4-2, on the final day of the Queen City Classic.
Game One • Virginia Tech 11, Villanova 3 (5 inn.)
Bree Carrico struck out three batters over the first two innings, but the Wildcats capitalized on a Tech error and scored two runs in the top of the second. The Hokies punched back right away. After Emma Mazzarone drove in an RBI, Gaby Mizelle launched her first home run of the season – a two-run shot to left field – to give the Hokies the lead.
Villanova tied it up once again in the top of the third, but Zoe Yaeger responded immediately with a two-run home run to give Tech the 5-3 lead.
Tech’s offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win in five innings. RBI singles from Michelle Chatfield, Mazzarone and Mizelle, along with a two-RBI double from Nora Abromavage, made it a 10-3 ball game. With the bases loaded, Addison Foster delivered a grounder to second to score the winning run.
Bree Carrico earned her second win in the circle. She struck out six batters and allowed just one earned run in the win.
Game Two • Charlotte 4, Virginia Tech 2
It was a scoreless battle through the first three innings. Despite Charlotte having the bases loaded, in the bottom of the second, Emma Mazzarone recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
Charlotte scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and added two more in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 3-0 game.
Tech punched back in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Nora Abromavage drilled a two-RBI double to left center to cut the deficit to 3-2.
A solo Charlotte home run made it 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth and Tech could not bring any more across the plate.
