BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech fell 3–1 to Notre Dame on Wednesday afternoon in its final home match of the season. The Hokies now stand at 11–19 overall and 3–16 in ACC play.
The first set opened with both teams trading points before Virginia Tech took a 15–13 lead into the media timeout. Out of the break, the Hokies posted a 4–0 run, highlighted by a block from Brianna Holladay, to extend the margin to 18–13. Notre Dame responded with a push of its own, closing the gap to 18–16 and forcing a Tech timeout. The Irish then surged ahead with a 6–0 run to take a 22–20 lead. An Adeline Hundl kill cut the deficit to 22–21, but Notre Dame closed out the set, 25–21.
Notre Dame opened the second set with the first point, but Tech quickly answered and pieced together a 6–0 run for a 7–2 lead behind an ace from Isabella Mishler and kills byElizabeth Aylward, Camilla Brandalise and Payton Woods. The Irish rallied to tie the set at 13–13, then pushed ahead 18–13, prompting a Hokies timeout. Tech responded with a 7–0 run to take a 23–24 edge, but Notre Dame tallied the final two points to secure the set, 25–23.
In the third set, Tech and Notre Dame battled through multiple ties before the Hokies reached the media timeout with a 15–14 lead. A 3–0 Tech run made it 18–16, but the Irish evened the score at 20–20. The Hokies regained momentum with a 3–0 spurt, including two kills from Woods and an Irish attack error, forcing a Notre Dame timeout at 24–23. Out of the break, Virginia Tech held on to take the set, 27–25.
Notre Dame opened the fourth set on a 5–0 run before Tech rallied to tie it at 7–7. The teams traded nine more ties up to 19–19. A kill by Aisha Keric and a block from Holladay and Keric gave Tech a brief 22–21 lead, but the Irish closed the match on a late run to take the set, 25–22.
