Hokie Men Secure Second Consecutive At-Large NCAA Bid

Virginia Tech men’s cross country earned an at-large bid to the 2025 NCAA Championships after a strong fourth-place finish at the Southeast Regional.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The NCAA Division I Cross Country Selection Committee announced Saturday, Nov. 15 that the Virginia Tech men’s cross country team has earned an at-large selection to the 2025 NCAA Championships. The national meet will be held at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday (Nov. 22). The women’s 6k is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. ET, followed by the men’s 10k at 11:10 a.m. ET. 

The Virginia Tech men secured their at-large bid after placing fourth at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.

ACC Championships – Men’s 8k 

At the ACC Championships, George Couttie delivered a standout performance, running a season-best 22:54.4 to finish fourth overall and earn his second All-ACC honor. Nicholas Kipchirchir followed with a 20th-place finish in 23:18.8, securing All-ACC honors for the first time in his career. Declan Rymer rounded out the top three Hokies, placing 38th in 23:42.7.

 NCAA Southeast Regionals – Men’s 10k 

Virginia Tech finished fourth with 119 points at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, producing two All-Region performers on the men’s team.

George Couttie earned All-Region honors with his fourth-place finish in 29:36.2, and Nicholas Kipchirchir claimed the second All-Region spot for the Hokies with a personal-best 30:04.0 to place 17th.
Declan Rymer was Tech’s third finisher, taking 29th in 30:19.8.

 

2024 NCAA Championships 

At the 2024 Championships, held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin, George Couttie capped an impressive season with a 14th-place finish in the men’s 10k. His personal-best time of 29:07.4 earned him the first All-American honor of his career and the program’s first since Peter Seufer in 2019. 

Couttie’s performance marks the third-highest NCAA finish in program history, trailing only Seufer (4th, 2019) and Steve Taylor (9th, 1987). 

William Winter and Ben Reynolds also delivered career-best performances, contributing to a team improvement of one minute and 47 seconds collectively from their regional 10k times.
