BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech (9-6, 1-3 ACC) secured its first ACC win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Boston College (12-4, 1-3 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
Virginia Tech opened the match with a 3-0 run before Boston College responded with a 4-0 stretch of its own to tighten the score. The first set featured 16 tie scores and six lead changes. With the score knotted at 28-28, Isabella Mishler served a crucial ball that led to a Boston College attack error, sealing the set for the Hokies, 30-28.
Freshman outside hitter Adeline Hundl made her first career start and delivered four kills on a .800 hitting percentage in the opening frame.
Boston College bounced back in the second set with a 25-14 win, pulling ahead with a 10-4 run to build a double-digit lead to secure the set.
In the third set, Virginia Tech regained control, never trailing by more than three points. The teams battled through nine ties and two lead changes. With the set tied at 26-26, Reese Hazelton tallied a kill assisted by Camilla Brandalise, followed by an Eagles error that gave Tech the 28-26 win.
The fourth set remained tight throughout, with the Eagles holding an early 8-4 lead before the Hokies closed the gap to 10-9. Strong performances from Hundl, Payton Woods and Brianna Holladay helped keep the score close. Tied at 23-23, Woods served her second ace of the season for match point. A block assist from Holladay and Aisha Keric on the final rally forced another Boston College error, giving Tech the 25-23 set win and the match.
Match Notes:
- Payton Woods recorded a season-high 20 kills – the most by a Hokie this season – and notched her first two service aces of the year. She leads the team with 165 kills.
- Adeline Hundl finished with a career-best eight kills in her debut start.
- Camilla Brandalise posted a career-high 35 assists, the most by a Hokie this season.
- Tech's two extended-set wins marked the first time since the season opener the Hokies won multiple sets beyond 25 points.
- The win marks the Hokies’ first conference victory since Oct. 13, 2024, at Clemson, also a four-set match, and snaps a 17-match losing streak in ACC play. It was also the first time since the season opener against NC Central that Tech won two sets that extended past 25 points.
