CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia Tech (5-3-4, 1-3-2) dropped a 3-0 match to No. 17 North Carolina (8-2-4, 2-0-4) inside Dorrance Field Sunday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both sides got off to a slow start offensively, with Declan Quill’s fourth-minute shot standing as the only attempt through the first 24 minutes of play for both teams. The Tar Heels didn’t register their first shot until the 25th minute, which sailed over the bar.

No. 17 North Carolina broke through in the 31st minute, converting a header off a corner-kick set piece to break the deadlock. Beltran Alvarez had two shots in the dwindling minutes of the first half, one blocked and the other saved, as Virginia Tech entered the break trailing, 1-0.

Early in the second half, the Tar Heels had a goal called back for offside in the 49th minute while senior Sam Joseph made two key saves to keep the deficit at one. Amir Ariely put a shot on frame in the 56th minute, the last of the match for Tech, forcing North Carolina’s keeper Andrew Cordes of his line.

The Tar Heels extended their lead in the 67th minute, as a throw-in created space in the box, allowing a finish from Bertil Rygaard Hansen. Hansen struck again at the 72nd minute mark, this time from close range, to move to 3-0.
