CARY, N.C. – Virginia Tech fights in the first round of the ACC Championships, but falls to SMU 4-1.

Ilyas Fahim notched a point for the Hokies, with a 7-5, 6-4 win on Court No. 2.

Tech dropped the doubles point to start off the match, but Maxime St. Hilaire and Frank Thompson were on top 5-3 when their match was abandoned.

The Hokies looked to bounce back in singles. Fahim and Alberto Orso kicked off singles with a strong start, winning their first sets 7-5 and 6-4, respectively.

Down 3-0, the Hokies kept the remaining singles courts close.

Though he fell in the first set, Scott Sculley made a strong effort for the Hokies winning his second set 6-2. He was up 4-3 in the third set when his match was abandoned.

Eyal Shumilov also sent his match to the third set, picking up a 6-0 second-set victory.

Despite close battles, the Hokies were unable to overcome the Mustangs Wednesday evening, SMU clinching the match on Court No. 6.
