Tech improves to 8-1 in ACC play

BLACKSBURG – Cori McMillan’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning secured the series sweep against Stanford as the Hokies defeated the Cardinal, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.

With the game tied at 5-5 and McMillan leading off the bottom of the seventh, she launched the second pitch of the at bat over the center field fence to secure the 6-5 victory.

How It Happened: Virginia Tech 6, Stanford 5
Stanford scored a run apiece in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead, but Tech responded and tallied four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

After Jordan Lynch successfully got on first with a single to second base, Kylie Aldridge blasted her fourth home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2. After back-to-back walks, Cori McMillan delivered a two-RBI single through the right side to give Tech a 4-2 lead.

The Cardinal added three runs in the top of the fifth and Rachel Castine immediately responded with a solo shot down the left field line to tie the game.

All tied up, McMillan delivered her third RBI of the day with a solo shot to center field for the walk-off victory.

Cassie Grizzard, Emma Lemley and Emma Mazzarone all pitched at least 2.0 innings in the win. Mazzarone earned her seventh victory of the season as she recorded two strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the final 2.2 innings pitched.
