Tech goes 4-1 at Hokie Invite

SALEM, Va. – No. 15/17 Virginia Tech capped off the Hokie Invite with a 2-0 Sunday. The Hokies defeated James Madison, 4-1, and Radford, 5-4.

Zoe Yaeger hit her first home run of the season with a two-run bomb to center field in Tech’s win over James Madison. Collectively, her and McMillan tallied two home runs apiece over both wins.

How It Happened: Virginia Tech 4, James Madison 1
After a quick top of the first for the Dukes, Zoe Yaeger capitalized on a Cori McMillan single with a two-run blast to center field – her first home run of the season – to make it 2-0 Hokies.

Despite James Madison getting on the board in the top of the third, the Hokies responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs. After Rachel Castine doubled down the left field line, McMillan sent her sixth home run of the season to right center to extend the lead to 4-1.

Emma Lemley shined in her eighth win of the season. After recording 12 strikeouts the previous night against Penn State, she followed that up with eight strikeouts against the Dukes. She allowed just four hits and had no earned runs in the win.

How It Happened: Virginia Tech 5, Radford 4
It was a scoreless contest until the bottom of the third. With Nora Abromavage and Bre Peck on base, Michelle Chatfield ripped a double to left center to score both runners and take a 2-0 lead.

Radford scored on an RBI-triple in the top of the fifth to cut the lead, but back-to-back solo home runs from Cori McMillan and Zoe Yaeger extended the Hokie lead to 4-1.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Radford’s Isabel Harrison hit a bases-clearing double to center field to tie the contest up at 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, Peck scored from third on a wild pitch to secure the 5-4 win.

Emma Lemley struck out eight batters and allowed just four hits against the Dukes
• She is 8-2 on the season
Zoe Yaeger hit her first and second home runs of the season against the Dukes and Highlanders
Cori McMillan hit her sixth and seventh home runs of the season with one apiece against James Madison and Radford
• McMillan currently leads the team with a .458 batting average
• McMillan finished the day 4-for-6 and tied Yaeger with a team-leading three RBIs
Sophie Kleiman earned her fourth win of the season from the circle against Radford
