BLACKSBURG – No. 14/16 Virginia Tech earned its 25th win of the season with two wins over Longwood on Wednesday night at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies won the first game 10-0 in five innings and the second game 7-1.
Cori McMillan hit her 50th career home run in the second win over the Lancers.
How It Happened: Virginia Tech 10, Longwood 0 (5 inn.)
After Cori McMillan reached first on a walk, Michelle Chatfield tripled to right center to bring in the first run of the game. Singles by Bre Peck and Emily LeGette brought in three more runs as the Hokies had an early 4-0 lead.
The bats produced a six-run inning for the Hokies, starting with a home run to right center by Jayden Jones to lead off the inning. A single by Peck brought in two RBIs and Zoe Yaeger followed it up with a double down the left field line that brought in Lyla Blackwell and McMillan.
A two-run bomb to left field by LeGette made it a 10-0 contest after two innings.
Emma Mazzarone struck out five and allowed just two hits in four innings for her sixth win of the season before Cassie Grizzard pitched the final inning. She recorded one strikeout in her eighth appearance of the season.
How It Happened: Virginia Tech 7, Longwood 1
Cori McMillan recorded her 50th career home run on the first pitch of the second game as she sent a solo shot to left center.
After a double by Longwood tied the game in the top of the third, the Hokies responded by taking the lead with a sacrifice fly by Rachel Castine.
McMillan hit her second home run of the game to extend the Hokie lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI single from Castine made it 4-1.
Back-to-back jacks from Kylie Aldridge and Emily LeGette got two more runs on the board for the Hokies before an RBI single to left field by Michelle Chatfield brought in the seventh run of the game.
Kleiman recorded two strikeouts in her seventh win of the season. Emma Lemley recorded her first save of the season as she struck out seven over 2.2 innings pitched.
