BLACKSBURG - Despite three athletes who scored 20 or more, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team fell to Syracuse 93-87 at Carilion Clinic Court Thursday night. Carys Baker and Carleigh Wenzel each had 24 points, a career-best for Baker and Lani White added 20 for the Hokies who have dropped three of four contests in the last two weeks.
Syracuse shot a sizzling 60% from the field and made 12 triples, with eight of those coming from Sophie Burrows who set a record with the most 3's by an opponent in Cassell. She led all scorers with 28 in the game and ws joined in double figures by four Orange, including Dominique Camp who posted 12 points and 10 assists.
The Hokies trailed by as many as 15 points early in the second half and were able to cut the deficit to just two at the 6:37 mark of the fourth quarter by stringing together defensive stops while converting chances on the offensive end. Tech shot 51% themselves and made 10 triples in the game, but were not able to ultimately overcome the Orange who earned their third ACC win of the season (3-8).
Tech is 15-8 (6-6) and head to Charlottesville Sunday afternoon for the second regular season meeting with rival Virginia at noon.
