Hokie relay squad takes bronze at ACCs

The men's 400 medley relay earns bronze and sets a new school record.

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Hokies had a successful day four at the ACC Championships, locking in a bronze medal and three new school records. 

Youssef Ramadan, Carles Coll Marti, Mario Molla Yanes and Brendan Whitfield took home the bronze medal in the 400 medley relay, logging a 3:02.25 swim. With that time, the squad also broke their standing school record of 3:02.34.

The women’s 400 medley relay made up of Carmen Weiler Sastre, Emily Santos, Athena Meneses Kovacs and Emily Claesson also posted a school record, swimming a 3:32.09. This broke the longstanding record of 3:32.82 set in 2018.

Carmen Weiler Sastre broke the Virginia Tech record in the 100 backstroke, as she posted a 51.09 in prelims. The junior now holds two individual school records and four records as part of a relay team. 

Weiler Sastre advanced to the A-Final in the 100 back where she swam a 51.28, good for sixth place overall. Emma Atkinson also advanced with a 52.73, competing in the C-Final. 

Landon Gentry advanced to the A-Final in the 200 fly, swimming a personal best and third-overall program time (1:41.45) in prelims. In the final, he posted a 1:41.86 and earned seventh place. 

Carl Bloebaum advanced to the 200 fly C-Final and entered the all-time record list in the No. 8 spot with a time of 1:44.04. 

In the men’s 100 back prelims, Mario Molla Yanes swam a 45.59, to move to fourth all-time in the program record book. He advanced to the A-Final, locking in seventh place with a time of 45.85. Youssef Ramadan posted a 46.28 in prelims and advanced to the C-Final. 

The Hokies saw success in the women’s 100 breaststroke, as Nichelly Lysy (1:01.11), Emily Santos (1:01.46) and Esther Park (1:02.13) advanced to the C-Final. Park’s time was a personal best. In the C-Final, Lysy logged a 1:01.04, a new personal best and program ninth-best time. 

Carles Coll Marti swam the 100 breast prelim in 51.86, which earned him a spot in the A-Final. In the final, he took fourth place overall with a 51.34. Ethan Maloney posted a 52.77 in prelims and competed in the C-Final.
