Freshman Victor Kimpel clinches win for Hokies with three-set victory on Court No. 5

RICHMOND – Tied at 3-3 with VCU on Sunday evening in the Commonwealth’s capital, Virginia Tech used a winning three-set effort from freshman Victor Kimpel to clinch its third win of the weekend.

After dropping the doubles point, the Hokies leaned on three newcomers and senior Alberto Orso, making his season debut, to claim four courts for the 4-3 victory.

Ilyas Fahim and Scott Sculley teamed up for a 6-3 victory in doubles on Court No. 3. Maxime St. Hilaire and Frank Thompson battled to a tiebreaker, but fell 7-6 (5) to concede the doubles point.

Freshman Eyal Shumilov cruised to his third singles victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph on Court No. 3, which was quickly followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win by Orso on Court No. 4.

The Rams evened the team score up at 2-2 with a win on Court No. 1, but the Hokies jumped back ahead when Julian Lozano battled back to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Court No. 2.

Tech found itself tied up after dropping Court No. 6, but Kimpel pieced together a strong third set on Court No. 5 for a 6-3, 3-6,  6-1 to give the Hokies their third win of the season.

Virginia Tech returns to action on Friday in Philadelphia, Pa. for a matchup with Penn.
