Hokie ClubATHENS, Ga. --The No. 21 Virginia Tech Hokies fought back from down 3-2 in the fifth inning to beat the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs 5-4 Friday.
Freshman Emma Mazzarone (3-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (10-2-1). The left-hander went 1.1 shutout innings while giving up one hit.
Offensively, the Hokies were led by senior Addy Greene, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two home runs, a walk and two RBI. Junior Cori McMillan furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Sophomore Trinity Martin also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Greene put Virginia Tech on the board with a one-out solo home run off junior Lilli Backes.
The Bulldogs failed to push any runs across before the Hokies offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Virginia Tech picked up a run on McMillan's leadoff home run off of Backes, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Hokies.
Virginia Tech's lead had disappeared once the sixth inning arrived and turned into a 3-2 Georgia advantage, when the Hokies re-gained control at 4-3. The Hokies picked up two runs when a single from Martin brought home junior Bre Peck and McMillan.
Virginia Tech held the Bulldogs scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Hokies picked up a run on Greene's leadoff dinger off senior Shelby Walters, bringing the Virginia Tech advantage to 5-3. Georgia put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hokies still held on for the 5-4 win.
