FORT MYERS, FLA. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team suffered its second loss of the season Saturday night at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines 76-65 in the Shell Division title game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off. The loss drops Tech to 6-2 on the season while Michigan sits at 7-1.
The Wolverines jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter 14-5 before the Hokies called a timeout to settle into the game.
Down 15 at the half, Tech came out firing with a 9-0 blitz to start the third quarter cutting the advantage to six. The Wolverines scored the game’s next bucket and would not allow the Hokies to get any closer the remainder of the night.
Carys Baker, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Hokies with 15 points and she was joined in double figures by Carleigh Wenzel (14) and Matilda Ekh (13).
Syla Swords scored 24 points and hit six 3’s, seeming to always have the answer for the Wolverines who shot 54.4% from the field on the night.
Tech thrived off of turnovers, forcing 20 and scoring 21 points, but a poor shooting effort (21-56) limited their opportunities to get back into the game.
The Hokies are back on the floor Wednesday, Dec. 4 at Georgia as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
