BLACKSBURG – In a game knotted up at halftime, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team tightened the screws defensively, forcing 20 turnovers as the Hokies pulled away from Rutgers late to earn a 91-80 victory on Carilion Clinic Court.
Tech moves to 4-1 on the season, while the Knights also own a 4-1 record.
Forward Rose Micheaux once again posted a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds as she got the Hokies going early in the game and then injected some energy into the building late with timely baskets.
Joining her in double figures scoring was Carleigh Wenzel who finished with 19, Matilda Ekh who added 13, and Samyha Suffren who recorded her best scoring performance to date with 16 off the bench. The speedy Suffren also record a steal, six boards and four assists in just 24 minutes of work.
The Knights shot the ball well (53.5%) but were limited with those 20 turnovers. Forward Destiny Adams who entered the contest averaging 27.0 points and 14.0 rebounds was held in check by a committee that included Carys Baker, Micheaux and Kayl Petersen. She finished the game with 18 points and just six rebounds.
Tech will close out its homestand on Saturday, Nov. 23 against Elon with a 2 p.m. tipoff against the Phoenix. That game will be broadcasted by ACCNX.
