BLACKSBURG – After a slow start in the opening few minutes, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team kicked into gear scoirng 85 points to outpace the visiting UNC Asheville Bulldogs 85-62 Wednesday evening on Carilion Clinic Court. The Hokies were led by point guard Carleigh Wenzel who recorded a career-high 25 points in the game and, for the second consecutive game led the squad in rebounds.
The Hokies move to 2-1, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-2 on the young season.
Tech initially got a boost from Mackenzie Nelson, the redshirt freshman guard who came off the bench and recorded two quick charges drawn swinging momentum in favor of the Hokies. A 12-0 run late in the first quarter punctuated by a Rose Micheaux layup gave the Hokies a 16-4 lead that they would never relinquish.
On the night, four Hokies scored in double figures, with Matilda Ekh (13), Samyha Suffren (12) Micheaux (11) and Kayl Petersen (10) combining for 71 of the team's 85.
Tech is in action next against Coppin State on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
