Hokies secure first ACC win over Clemson

The squad totaled 23 blocks against the Tigers, recording the fourth match of the season with 20 or more blocks.

BLACKSBURG - The Hokies (7-9, 1-5 ACC) topped Clemson (8-9, 0-6 ACC) in four sets on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Early in set one, the Tigers captured a 6-0 service run, which led to a 10-point advantage midway through the set, creating a deficit that could not be closed, with a set score of 16-25.  Patrick led the Hokies offensively in set one with four kills and Mangual Duran reached five digs.

Set two was a different story.  While Clemson retained the lead to start, the Hokies surpassed them early and held them to one lead change and four tied scores to a 25-21 result.  The squad put up seven total blocks with Pearce recording five kills and six digs, Wahlgren securing 11 assists and Pearce and Mangual Duran posting five perfect receptions apiece.

Set three was a battle, coming to a 25-19 result, giving VT the lead in the match.  Serving rights were traded majority of the set until Tech was able to jump out to an eight point advantage late.  Patrick and Robinson led the offense with four kills apiece while Wahlgren, Hallman, Robinson and Malinowski teamed up for eight block assists.

Belle Patrick led efforts in set four with four kills, five digs, and three aces.  The squad rallied around the freshman and pushed to a 25-22 set four victory, securing their first ACC victory of the season.

GAME NOTES

  • Viktoria Wahlgren and Jordan Hallman led defensive efforts at the net with six total blocks apiece - Wahlgren with six assists, a career-high, and Hallman with one solo and five assists. Jasmine Robinson followed the duo with five block assists and Sarah Malinowski contributed one block solo and three assists for four total.
  • Hallman, Malinowski and Hailey Pearce each boasted a block solo.
  • Leandra Mangual Duran led back row efforts with a match-high 16 digs and 10 perfect receptions.  The match being her ninth of the season with double-digit digs.
  • Belle Patrick led offensive efforts with 14 kills and a career-high four service aces.  The outside tacked on five digs and one block assist.
  • Malinowski tied her career-high of 11 kills and hitting percentage of .409.
  • Robinson followed the offensive efforts with nine kills on a match-best clip of .471.
  • Along with her six block assists, Wahlgren also boasted 37 assists, six digs, three kills and one ace.
  • Pearce was the third contributor at the service line with two aces.
  • Ece Yildiz contributed heavily to the back row efforts with 14 perfect receptions and five digs.
  • Tech totaled 47 kills, 45 assists, 49 digs, 23 total blocks and seven aces.
