Hokies top VCU in four sets Friday night

RICHMOND, Va. - The Hokies met commonwealth foe, VCU, on Friday night for the 31st time in the series history.  Virginia Tech (2-2) topped VCU (0-3) in a swift four sets. Tech improves to 22-9 in the series history.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In set one, Tech and VCU traded two- and three-point scoring runs until the Hokies managed to capture a four point advantage at 23-19.  The Rams put together a five-point run to turn the tides and claim set one 26-24.

The Hokies returned the favor in set two, after 13 tied scores and eight lead changes, the squad went on a 5-0 run to secure the 25-20 win.

In set three, the squads limited the excitement with just three tie scores and three lead changes, but the Hokies blocking efforts elevated significantly, with 11 assists and one solo to secure set three 25-21.

There was never a question in the fourth as the Hokies jumped out to a 10-5 advantage and never looked back, claiming the match on a 25-19 set four.

GAME NOTES

  • Hailey Pearce set a new career-high of 16 kills, topping her previous career-high of 15, set last weekend.
  • Pearce also collected one service ace, six digs, two block solos and two block assists.
  • Viktoria Wahlgren reached a season-high 40 assists and four aces in the contest, tacking on two digs and two block assists.
  • Aisha Keric boasted the match-high clip of .500, with four kills on eight attempts and no errors.  The four kills, three aces and six digs were all career-highs for the freshman.
  • Sierra Cates was one of three Hokies to record three or more aces in the four-set match, tying her career-high.
  • Leandra Mangual Duran and Ece Yildiz each reached double-digit digs with Mangual Duran tallying the team-high of 13 and Yildiz capturing 10.  
  • Jasmine Robinson boasted seven kills on a .417 clip with four block assists, reaching season-highs in the respective categories.
  • Jordan Hallman recorded her fouth straight game with three or more block assists, reaching five for the third time this season.
  • Tech totaled 52 kills, 50 assists, 16 aces, 52 digs and 19 block assists.

UP NEXT

The Hokies will meet Lafayette for the first time in program history at 1 p.m. on Saturday in day two of the VCU Invitational.
