BLACKSBURG – With the 2024 season opener against Vanderbilt just around the corner, the Hokies’ tight end unit is emerging as a formidable group under the leadership of Tight Ends Coach Stu Holt, along with Associate Tight Ends Coach Mike Moyseenko. Together, they’ve developed a tight end corps poised to play a crucial role in the offense this season.
Every week of Fall Camp, the position preview series, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance, will break down the Virginia Tech football roster. In this position preview, we’ll break down the tight end room and explore what these players bring to the table.
Benji Gosnell, brother to wide receiver Stephen Gosnell, made his debut for the Hokies last season, playing in all 13 games with 134 receiving yards and a touchdown. The redshirt sophomore has shown his ability to deliver in crucial moments, as demonstrated in the Military Bowl win over Tulane. In the bowl game, he caught two passes for 21 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, solidifying his role as a player capable of making an impact when it counts.
Harrison Saint Germain, who fills the role as the de facto blocker the best, made his first career appearance in 2022 against Old Dominion and took on a more active role last season, playing in all 13 games. He primarily appeared in multiple tight end sets or as an additional blocker, but he also managed to showcase his receiving skills. In the Military Bowl against Tulane, he recorded his first two career receptions, including a 12-yard catch and a one-yard touchdown pass from Drones late in the first half. Gosnell and Saint Germain are both looking to increase their production when their number is called this season.
Nick Gallo is back for his sixth year after missing last season due to injury. He was named to the Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list by the College Sports Communicators, Associated Press and Fiesta Bowl. Throughout his career, the Richboro, Pennsylvania native has tallied 55 receptions for 469 yards and a touchdown. In 2022, he was the Hokies’ second-leading receiver with 256 yards and ranked second in receptions with 30. He is the oldest player in the tight ends room, serving as a veteran presence for the rest of the group.
Tech has two promising young prospects in redshirt freshmen Zeke Wimbush and Ja'Ricous Hairston. Both put up impressive numbers in high school and will be in contention for playing time this year, as the two continue to develop within Tyler Bowen’s system.
Other returners competing for time on the field include Cole Pickett and Cole Reemsnyder. Each of them has made appearances in at least one game, primarily on special teams, but they shouldn’t be overlooked. The two have the potential to step into more prominent roles this season as the fall goes on.
