Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – The sun sits high in the sky over Blacksburg as Virginia Tech football takes their first reps of Phase Four. After summer workouts focused on building up player conditioning, agility and mobility, it’s finally time to buckle up those chinstraps. The Hokies, led by head coach Brent Pry, are prepared for a full schedule of team activities throughout August, with a major increase in physicality as padded practices occur during camp.
To start day one of a new phase, the energy and competitive spirit were high on the Steve Johnson Practice Field and inside the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility. Skill position players equipped with spider shoulder pads and helmets kicked it off with a redzone period of 1-on-1 battles. As expected, both the offense and defense erupted in cheers as their teammates caught passes and deflected balls thrown their way.

Shortly after, the team went into positional group drills and eventually worked their way to 7-on-7 periods. Quarterback Kyron Drones led the offense with a familiar group of starters, while the first-team defense included some new faces, such as linebacker Sam Brumfield. Leaders amongst the roster are beginning to emerge, and one defensive lineman who stood out is senior Cole Nelson, carrier of the infamous Lunch Pail.
Overall, the first practice of Fall Camp set the tone for an intriguing season ahead. Players and coaches will meet with the media for the first time on Friday evening. Fans can also tune in on Tuesday, Aug. 6 to watch Pry and each coordinator speak during media day.
