ARLINGTON, Texas – Fulfilling their professional aspirations during Monday’s second day of the 2024 MLB Draft, Virginia Tech junior third baseman Carson DeMartini, junior pitcher Wyatt Parliament and senior outfielder Eddie Micheletti Jr. were selected during the event’s fourth, seventh and eighth rounds, respectively, furthering the Hokies’ celebrated tradition of producing next-level talent.

DeMartini led Virginia Tech’s 2024 draft class upon being chosen at No. 130 overall by the Philadelphia Phillies, who picked up a Tech infielder for the second time spanning the last four years (2021 – T.J. Rumfield). The Hokies’ ACC-era home run king became the program’s ninth player since 2020 to have been selected during the draft’s opening five rounds; also becoming the seventh position player from its famed 2022 NCAA Super Regional roster to ultimately have been drafted.

Parliament was selected at No. 211 overall by the New York Yankees, who scooped up a Virginia Tech pitcher for the first time since 2017 (Aaron McGarity). Micheletti Jr. followed during the next round when the Toronto Blue Jays moved for him at No. 247 overall – denoting the franchise’s first time drafting from the Hokies’ pipeline.

Packaging DeMartini, Parliament and Micheletti Jr.’s picks, Virginia Tech proudly extended its streak to 17 consecutive years of producing multiple MLB Draft selections (dating to 2008) ahead of Tuesday’s final draft day. Together, the Tech trio marks the sixth all-time instance of three or more Hokies coming off the board during the draft’s opening 10 rounds, including the third year in a row (1982, 2010, 2013, 2022-24).

Through seven seasons at the helm of Virginia Tech, head coach John Szefc has now mentored 24 MLB Draft selections in Blacksburg – 14 of whom have been taken inside the first 10 rounds. With DeMartini adding to the count, nine of Tech’s picks under Szefc have also been called within the draft’s top 175 selections.

Virginia Tech is optimistically expecting its 2024 MLB Draft class will expand on Tuesday, July 16, when the final 10 rounds are conducted. Digital coverage of rounds 11 through 20 will be available courtesy of mlb.com beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
