McMillan homers twice in No. 13/15 Virginia Tech's 9-7 victory over Marshall

BLACKSBURG, VA --Junior Cori McMillan put together an outstanding outing at the plate Wednesday, hitting two homers to help power the No. 13/15 Virginia Tech Hokies past the Marshall Thundering Herd 9-7.

Sophomore Lyndsey Grein (11-3) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (37-9-1). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out five.

McMillan went 4-for-4 at the plate, supplementing her two home runs with four RBIs. Senior Addy Greene added to McMillan's awesome power-hitting performance by going 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI along with two walks. Sophomore Trinity Martin also chipped in for the Hokies, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run groundout off the bat of sophomore Kylie Aldridge.

The Thundering Herd then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-4 lead before the Hokies got back on the board in the second. Virginia Tech scored twice on McMillan's two-run homer, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech kept Marshall scoreless before expanding their lead to 8-5 the following inning. The Hokies scored twice on solo home runs from Martin and Greene.

The Thundering Herd gained ground, closing the gap to 8-6 until Virginia Tech added some insurance in the fifth. The Hokies sent home a run on McMillan's two-out solo dinger off senior Savannah Rice, bringing the score to 9-6 in favor of Virginia Tech. Marshall put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hokies still held on for the 9-7 win.
