BLACKSBURG, Va. --Freshman Emma Mazzarone and junior Molly Jacobson combined to throw a shutout on Saturday as the No. 15/16 Virginia Tech Hokies blanked the Boston College Eagles 9-0.
Mazzarone (8-2) started and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (30-9-1), going four shutout innings while giving up one hit, walking two, and striking out five. Jacobson was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit.
Offensively, the Hokies were led by junior Bre Peck, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, a walk and four RBI. Senior Cameron Fagan put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Senior Addy Greene also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Fagan.
The Hokies then tacked on runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, with their biggest output coming in the second when they scored three times. Those three runs came across on a three-run homer from Peck that scored freshman Michelle Chatfield and junior Cori McMillan.
