Georgia Tech evens series against No. 16 Virginia Tech

ATLANTA – Winding up on the wrong side of a lopsided outcome on Saturday, the No. 16 Virginia Tech baseball team was defeated, 19-0, by Georgia Tech in seven innings (via ACC run rule) at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Virginia Tech (23-9, 11-6 ACC) was held to three hits – all singles – by left-hand starter Cam Jones, who pitched a complete game shutout, striking out six Hokies without allowing a walk.

Collectively enduring a rough day on the mound, eight Virginia Tech pitchers combined to issue 19 walks – the most the Hokies have logged during a game since at least the 2005 season. Right-hand starter Wyatt Parliament was pulled three batters into the second inning after allowing six of the nine batters he faced to reach base, wearing the burden of four earned runs.

Georgia Tech (21-12, 6-8 ACC) broke away by plating six runs during the bottom of the second inning, later scoring eight two-out runs during the bottom of the fifth inning. Matthew Ellis hit the grand slam off David Shoemaker that pushed the Yellow Jackets' lead to 7-0 with an out yet to be recorded during the second inning.

Virginia Tech was unable to escape the bottom of the fifth inning, despite turning a 4-6-3 double play that posted two quick outs and wiped the bases clean. After the Hokies were errantly unable to turn the inning-ending out, Georgia Tech managed to bring 10 more batters to the plate, benefiting from six walks and two run-scoring doubles by Drew Burress and John Giesler.

Saturday's result snapped Virginia Tech's streak of 90 consecutive games played without being shut out, dating back to May 27, 2022 (10-0 loss to North Carolina at the ACC Baseball Championship).
