McMillan records four RBIs in No. 23/20 Virginia Tech's 9-1 victory against Notre Dame

BLACKSBURG – Junior Cori McMillan collected four RBIs to help power the Virginia Tech Hokies past the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 9-1 on Saturday.

Freshman Emma Mazzarone (4-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (14-3-1, ). The lefty went six innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out six.

McMillan went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk in addition to her four RBIs for the Hokies. Junior Bre Peck put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Michelle Chatfield also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from McMillan.

The Fighting Irish failed to push any runs across before the Hokies built on their lead in the fifth inning. Virginia Tech hit two home runs in the inning on the way to pushing four runs aross. which brought the Hokies lead to 7-1.

Virginia Tech held Notre Dame scoreless before expanding their lead to 9-1 the following inning. The Hokies pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of McMillan that scored senior Addy Greene and senior Cameron Fagan. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech coasted to the win.

» Notre Dame was led offensively by senior Karina Gaskins, who went 0-for-1.
» Junior Shannon Becker led the Fighting Irish pitching staff, throwing one inning of two-run ball.
