GAME 2 | Virginia Tech 5, Louisville 2
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --Junior Emma Lemley had everything working on Saturday, striking out 11 Louisville hitters over 4.2 innings of work to help power the Virginia Tech Hokies over the Cardinals 5-2.
In addition to her 11 strikeouts, Lemley (4-1) threw 4.2 shutout innings while giving up one hit and walking none for Virginia Tech (17-4-1, ). Freshman Emma Mazzarone also made an impact in the circle for the Hokies, starting the ballgame and throwing 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on four hits, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Junior Bre Peck led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, a home run, a walk and an RBI. Junior Cori McMillan compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-5 with the go-ahead home run and three RBI. Senior Emma Ritter also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Virginia Tech with a home run, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Peck put Virginia Tech on the board with a leadoff home run off freshman Brooke Gray.
The Hokies then held the Cardinals scoreless before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Ritter's two-out solo home run off of Gray, which brought the Hokies lead to 2-0.
Louisville came back to tie the ballgame at two before Virginia Tech reclaimed a 5-2 advantage in the tenth inning. The Hokies scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of McMillan that scored freshman Michelle Chatfield and Peck. The score remained 5-2 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech held on for the win.
