Virginia Tech defeats Radford 13-1 behind Grein's 10-strikeout performance

ATHENS, Ga. --Sophomore Lyndsey Grein dominated on Sunday, striking out 10 Radford hitters over five innings of work to help power the No. 21 Virginia Tech Hokies past the Highlanders 13-1.

In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Grein (3-1) tossed five innings, giving up one run on two hits and walking none for Virginia Tech (12-3-1).

At the plate, the Hokies were paced by freshman Zoe Yaeger, who went 3-for-3 on the day with two home runs and five RBI. Freshman Michelle Chatfield put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Cameron Fagan also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Virginia Tech hit three home runs in the inning on the way to scoring five runs.

The Hokies then held the Highlanders scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. The Virginia Tech offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of freshman Lyla Blackwell, which brought the Hokies lead to 9-0.

Virginia Tech kept Radford scoreless before building their lead to 13-0 the following inning. The Hokies bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Yaeger. Radford put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Virginia Tech still coasted to the 13-1 win.
