Virginia Tech leads from second inning on in 9-1 victory over Elon

BLACKSBURG, Va. --The No. 21 Virginia Tech Hokies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 9-1 win over the Elon Phoenix on Wednesday.

Sophomore Cassie Grizzard (3-0) got the win for Virginia Tech (8-2-1). The lefty went two shutout innings without giving up a hit, no walks and striking out two. Junior Emma Lemley also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking three and striking out three.

Junior Cori McMillan led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple, a home run and two RBI. Senior Cameron Fagan furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior Bre Peck also helped out, going 1-for-3 for Virginia Tech with a double, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. McMillan came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech and get them on the board.

The Phoenix failed to push any runs across before the Hokies offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Virginia Tech pushed across a run on senior Addy Greene's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech held Elon scoreless before expanding their lead to 3-0 the following inning. The Hokies notched a run on Fagan's two-out RBI double.

Virginia Tech kept the Phoenix scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Hokies scored twice on McMillan's two-run homer, bringing the score to 5-0 in favor of Virginia Tech.

Elon got within 5-1 until the Hokies scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 9-1. The Virginia Tech offense piled up four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of freshman Emily LeGette. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies coasted to the win.

GAME NOTES
» The Hokies' power output was led by McMillan, who picked up two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Virginia Tech's highest scoring inning was the sixth, when it pushed four runs across.
» The Hokies had control of the rest of the game after moving ahead of the Phoenix 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
» The Hokies out-hit the Phoenix at an 11-3 clip.
» Virginia Tech went 4-for-9 (.444) with runners in scoring position.
» Virginia Tech pitchers limited Elon to just 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
» Virginia Tech pitchers faced 27 Elon hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and three fly balls while striking out six.
» McMillan led the Hokies at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run and two RBI.
» Elon was led offensively by senior Megan Grant, who went 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
