AUBURN, Ala. – Junior Bre Peck delivered a pivotal grand slam, propelling the Hokies to a 9-5 lead, against No. 20 Auburn, in the seventh inning before the game was interrupted due to inclement weather.
According to NCAA rules, when a game is suspended prior to its completion, the score reverts to the last full inning played. With the contest tied at 5-5 at the end of the sixth inning, this score was deemed final. It is the first tie in the history of the program.
How It Happened
Junior Emma Lemley made her first start of the season in the circle, holding the Tigers scoreless for two innings until a solo home run in the third inning gave Auburn a 1-0 lead. The Hokies broke through in the fifth inning when Cori McMillan ignited a rally with a leadoff double. Rachel Castine reached base on a walk, followed by a RBI double from Emma Ritter. A throwing error by the Tigers allowed Cameron Fagan to reach base and score Castine, putting the Hokies up 2-0.
Auburn responded in the sixth inning with three runs, capitalizing on a wild pitch by Cassie Grizzard and a two-run homer. Tech's offense answered to tie the game 5-5, courtesy of a double by Bre Peck and a two-run home run by Castine, her third of the weekend.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Hokies loaded the bases with three consecutive walks to Fagan, Addy Greene, and Emily LeGette. Peck then delivered a game-changing grand slam to extend the Hokies' lead to 9-5. Later in the inning, the game was put into a weather delay for two hours before officially being called.
