Amoore scores 29 points in Virginia Tech's 75-62 victory against Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY --Georgia Amoore scored 29 points to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team over the Syracuse Orange 75-62 on the road Sunday.

Amoore added three assists to her 29 point game to lead the Hokies (16-4, 7-2). Elizabeth Kitley helped out with six points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks and Cayla King chipped in with 13 points.


 

Led by Kitley's three offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in seven second chance points.

The Virginia Tech defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Sunday's game, forcing 13 Syracuse turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Kitley's two steals led the way individually for the Hokies.


How It Happened

After jumping out to an 11-6 advantage, Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run with 4:08 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Carleigh Wenzel, to increase its lead to 19-6. They then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 23-9 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 23 points.

The Hokies maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 36-32 edge. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 13 points.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run to expand its lead further to 43-35 with 5:01 to go in the third. The Hokies held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 55-47 edge. Virginia Tech scored five fast break points in the quarter.

The Hokies kept their lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kitley's layup, to grow the lead to 67-57 with 2:08 to go in the contest. Virginia Tech kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 75-62 win. The Hokies got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring four fast break points.
