BLACKSBURG, VA --Elizabeth Kitley scored 29 points and Georgia Amoore added 24 and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team took down the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 87-69 at home Thursday.
The Hokies (15-4, 6-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who had 29 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Amoore added a double-double with 24 points and 13 assists and Olivia Summiel helped out with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Virginia Tech did a great job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 20 assists while turning the ball over six times. Amoore's 13 assists led the distribution list for the Hokies.
They also did a great job disrupting Georgia Tech's shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Kitley's two rejections led the way individually for the Hokies.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 4-2 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run with 7:52 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Carleigh Wenzel, to increase its lead to 11-2. The Hokies then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 28-13 advantage.
Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:03 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 35-21. The Yellow Jackets cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 46-35 advantage heading into halftime. The Hokies saw non-starters score five of its 18 total points off the bench in the quarter.
The Hokies wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Amoore, to expand its lead further to 51-35 with 8:10 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, Virginia Tech added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 63-45 edge. Virginia Tech took advantage of three Georgia Tech turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways.
Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Amoore's three, to grow the lead to 72-49 with 6:29 to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 87-69 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 24 points.
