Hokies compete at U.S. Open

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Multiple Virginia Tech swimmers traveled to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the 2023 Toyota U.S. Open Championships from Nov. 29 – Dec. 2. Throughout the competition, the Hokies were represented in multiple finals.

In the 1500 freestyle, Chase Travis showed she is one of the best in the distance races. She placed fifth overall with a time of 16.39.91.

Nico Garcia Saiz showed he could compete with the best when he placed 10th overall in the 200 backstroke finals. He finished with a time of 1:59.82. He also competed in the 100 backstroke finals, finishing 15th overall with a time of 55.91.

Caroline Bentz made the finals in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. In the 100, Bentz made the finals and placed 11th overall with a time of 1:00.70. Carmen Weiler Sastre was right behind her finishing 12th overall with a time of 1:01.04. Bentz followed this performance by placing 11th overall again in the 200 with a time of 2:12.23.

Carles Coll Marti also made two finals throughout the event. In the 100 breaststroke, Coll Marti placed 19th overall in the finals with a time of 1:01.93. Coll Marti then placed 15th overall in the finals for the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.65. Also competing in the 200 breaststroke final was AJ Pouch. He finished 12th overall in the finals with a time of 2:13.48.  

In the men's 200 free finals, Luis Dominguez Calogne placed 24th overall with a time of 1:51.60. 

The Hokies had a strong representation in the finals for the 100 butterfly. Mario Molla Yanes placed 11th overall in the finals with a time of 52.28. Youssef Ramadan followed placing 21st overall in the finals with a time of 53.80. 

Alumnus Ian Ho also represented the Hokies in the finals. He placed 16th overall in the 50 freestyle finals with a time of 22.41. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Tech swim and dive team will be back at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Jan. 4 at 4 p.m. to compete in a dual meet against Queens University.
