BLACKSBURG, VA --Six Hokies scored in double digits and Virginia Tech defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers 91-41 at home Sunday.
The Hokies (10-2, 1-0) had six players score in double figures, the first time in program history that has happened in an ACC game, led by Georgia Amoore, who had 20 points and two steals. Matilda Ekh added 16 points and four assists and Cayla King chipped in as well with 11 points and two steals.
Virginia Tech shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up 19 assists on 34 made field goals. Individually, Ekh dished out the most for the Hokies with four assists and Carleigh Wenzel also helped out with four assists of her own.
Virginia Tech forced 18 Pittsburgh turnovers while committing only eight themselves in Sunday's game. The Hokies turned those takeaways into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. King led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
Virginia Tech started out the scoring by going on a 10-0 run, culminating in a three from Amoore, to take an early lead with 7:10 left in the first quarter. The Hokies then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 22-5 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.
Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 3:43 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Elizabeth Kitley, to increase its lead to 34-16, a score that would hold until halftime. Virginia Tech forced five Pittsburgh turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.
Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from King, to expand its lead further to 43-19 with 8:01 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies added 12 points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 65-29 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 31 total points.
Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 74-36 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Clara Strack's jumper, to grow the lead to 84-36 with 3:12 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 91-41 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 26 points.
