BLACKSBURG, VA --Elizabeth Kitley notched a double-double with 23 points and 17 rebounds to help the Virginia Tech women's basketball team beat the William & Mary Tribe 76-43 at home Thursday.
The Hokies (9-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who recorded her 13th rebound of the day early in the third quarter as she became not only the program's all-time leader in rebounds, but the ACC's leader as well. Carys Baker tacked on 13 points off the bench and Georgia Amoore helped out with 12 points and seven assists.
Virginia Tech collected 52 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to William & Mary's 32, led by Kitley's 17 boards. The Hokies also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into 15 second chance points.
The Virginia Tech defense held William & Mary shooters to just 23.7 percent from the field, including 23.8 percent from three-point range. The Tribe did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored three second chance points while Virginia Tech pulled down 39 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-3, Virginia Tech went on a 10-0 run with 3:08 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Clara Strack, to take a 13-11 lead. The Hokies then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 14-13.
Virginia Tech then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kitley, to take a 19-14 lead. The Tribe cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 27-24 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 14 points close to the basket.
Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Cayla King, to expand its lead further to 37-26 with 3:13 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 47-33 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 20 total points.
Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 56-39 before going on a 15-0 run, finished off by Carleigh Wenzel's layup, to grow the lead to 71-39 with 1:58 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 76-43 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 29 points.
