Salem, VA – Virginia Tech wrestling sophomore picked up where he left off after a phenomenal freshman campaign last year as he picked up his third Southeast Open title to lead the Hokies in Salem, Virginia on Saturday. Hunter Mason, Rafael Hipolito, Jr., Luke Robie, and Logan Frazier also secured titles Tech in the first competition of the season.
No. 4 Henson was impressive all day at 149-pounds – going 5-0 with four bonus point victories – without giving up a single takedown throughout the tournament including a victory over multiple-time NCAA qualifier Shannon Hanna. Henson added to his career of accolades with his third SERTC Open title as he won the tournament as a high school senior just two years ago.
Four freshmen had first place finishes in their debuts donning Virginia Tech singlets. At 141-pounds, Mason found the top of the podium with five bonus point victories in as many matches. The Greeneville, TN native secured three pins and two major decisions to take first place in the Cregger Center. Hipolito, Jr. was electric in his bouts with explosive takedowns and throws that saw him take first in his first collegiate competition. The world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu savant tallied four bonus point victories in five total bouts on Saturday at 157-pounds. A familiar last name to Hokie wrestling fans, Luke Robie placed first at 149-pounds after going 5-0 on the day. Robie had a gritty 4-2 victory in the semifinals but was able to control the narrative in the finals with a dominant 8-2 victory in his first collegiate tournament. Closing out the first-place party was Crown Point, IN native, Logan Frazier finding the top of the podium at 133-pounds. Frazier went 4-0 with a major decision for the Hokies.
Also placing for Tech were Clayton Ulrey (2nd place, 157-pounds), Sam Fisher (2nd place, 184-pounds), Sam Latona (3rd place, 133-pounds), Tom Crook (5th place, 149-pounds). Full tournament results can be found at the top of the page.
