BLACKSBURG, VA --Elizabeth Kitley scored 31 points to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team over the UNC Greensboro Spartans 72-51 at home Monday.
Kitley added 10 rebounds and three blocks to her 31-point game to lead the Hokies (3-1). Georgia Amoore helped out with nine points and eight assists and Matilda Ekh chipped in with nine points and two blocks.
Virginia Tech collected 44 rebounds in Monday's game compared to UNC Greensboro's 30, led by Kitley's 10 boards. On the offensive glass, Virginia Tech turned 12 rebounds into 15 second chance points.
The Hokies did a great job disrupting UNC Greensboro shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Kitley's three rejections led the way individually for Virginia Tech.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-8, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 3:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Carleigh Wenzel, to take a 13-10 lead. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-16 advantage. Virginia Tech did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
Virginia Tech built that first quarter lead to 27-20 before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 5:08 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Carys Baker, to increase its lead to 34-20. The Hokies kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 39-25 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech forced four UNC Greensboro turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.
After intermission, Virginia Tech added to its advantage and owned a 56-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hokies started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 63-41 with 8:01 to go in the contest. The Spartans narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 72-51 win. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
