CHARLOTTE, NC --Georgia Amoore scored a career-high 31 points, but the Virginia Tech women's basketball team fell to the No. 3 Iowa Hawkeyes 80-76 at Spectrum Center Thursday night in the Ally Tipoff.
Amoore added three assists to her 31 point game to lead the Hokies (1-1). Elizabeth Kitley helped out with a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds and Matilda Ekh chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.
Led by Kitley's five offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
Virginia Tech did a great job disrupting Iowa shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Kitley's three rejections led the way individually for the Hokies.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-4, Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run with 3:18 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 13-12. The Hokies then closed the rest of the gap and grabbed an 18-15 lead heading into quarter number two. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
Iowa fought back to tie the game at 21-21 before Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run starting at the 6:50 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Carleigh Wenzel, to take a 28-21 lead. The Hawkeyes then came roaring back to take a 33-32 lead heading into halftime.
Continuing to increase its lead after halftime, Iowa built onto a 53-43 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Ekh, to trim its deficit to 53-48 with 1:00 to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia Tech took advantage of four Iowa turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Iowa kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 74-62 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Wenzel's three, to shrink the deficit to 74-68 with 3:19 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept their comeback going, but Iowa managed to hold on for the 80-76 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 28 points.
