Hokies sweep season opener at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Virginia Tech swimming and diving went 2-0 Saturday in its season opener at George Washington. The men's team beat the Colonials 169-120 and the women's team won 157-132.

Tech Women 
In the first event of the season, Emma Atkinson, Fanni Gyurinovic, Emily Claesson and Carmen Weiler Sastre took home first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.01. Atkinson followed this event with a win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.56 and in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.33. Weiler Sastre continued her win streak in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.19 and in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.77. In the 50 freestyle, Claesson got first with a 24.04 with Gyurinovics right behind her with a 24.06.

Sophomore Alison Henry started her season with a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.86 and then went on to win the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.69.

Emma Inch brought speed to the pool as well, finishing first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.71.

In distance, Chase Travis won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:02.99 and placed second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:16.92.

On the boards, the Hokies gave a strong performance. In the 1-meter, Peyton Guziec placed second with a 251.70 and was followed by Grace Austin who placed third with a 241.05. In the 3-meter, Ava Gilroy had solid dives to place second with a 260.48.

Tech Men 
Forest Webb, Carles Coll Marti, William Hayon and Luis Dominguez began their seasons with a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.57. Following the relay, Coll Marti won the 100 and 200 breaststroke with a time of 54.23 and 1:59.06, respectively, followed closely by AJ Pouch with a time of 56.37 and 2:02.06. Hayon got first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.74.

Nico Garcia Saiz got his season underway with a win in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:26.52, followed closely by Lee Naber with a time of 9:29.06. Garcia Saiz followed with a win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.10.

Freshmen Brendan Whitfield and Daniil Pancerevas established they are valuable additions to the program. Whitfield finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.11 followed by Pancerevas with a time of 1:39.73. Whitfield continued his streak with a 20.37 in the 50 freestyle.

Jacob Fisher dominated on the boards for the men. He finished first in the 1-meter with a 305.48 and first in the 3-meter with a 381.15.
