Hokies prepare for ACC Outdoor Championships

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams head to Raleigh, N.C. on Thursday, May 11 - Saturday, May 13 to compete at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
Hokies look to continue their strong performance from the ACC Indoor Championships winning both th men's and women's titles for a second consecutive year. The Virginia Tech men placed second at the 2022 Outdoor Championships winning two individual titles and the 4x100m relay (93 points). The women's team had nine top-five individual finishers resulting in the team placing eighth with 54 points. 

Tech is looking for its fifth overall outdoor title having last won the conference meet in 2019. The women's team last won the meet in 2017 with 124.5 points. 
 
VIRGINIA TECH IN THE RANKINGS
Women

Kenna Stimmel is looking to claim her second ACC pole vault title after winning the indoor championships with a height of 14' 5.25" (4.40m). Stimmel cleared the same height at the NCAA Indoor Championships finishing fourth. She ranks first in the ACC heading into the outdoor championships. Teammate Julia Fixsen ranks second in the vault followed by Hayley Horvath and Journey Gurley tied for sixth. 

Jumper Victoria Gorlova leads the ACC in the women's triple jump with a season-best distance of 44' 5.25" (13.54m). Gorlova won her second straight indoor championship triple jump title in February with a mark of 43' 0.25" (13.11m).  Finishing second at the indoor championships, teammate Cierra Pyles is ranked third in the conference with a personal-best mark of 43' 7.75" (13.30m). 

Sara Killinen ranks first in the hammer throw with a season-best distance of 222' 10" (67.93m). Killinen placed fourth at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships throwing a personal-best distance of 233' 0" (71.02m). Rebecca Mammel and Barbora Stejfova sit fourth and fifth in the event. Mammel won the 2023 ACC indoor conference championships in the weight throw setting a meet record of 76' 5" (23.29m). 

Senior Essence Henderson will compete in two events this weekend, ranking fourth in shot put and fifth in discus. Henderson finished second in shot put at last years ACC outdoor championships putting 55' 11.75" (17.06m). Newcomer Katrin Brzyszkowska is placed third in shot put heading into the championships with a mark of 53' 11.25" (16.24m). 

On the track, Lindsey Butler ranks second in the 800m within the ACC clocking a time of 2:02.78, followed by Star Price in third (2:03.97). Butler finished fourth at the ACC indoor championships in the 800m clocking in a time of 2:04.31. Barbora Malikova looks to improve upon her fourth place finish at the 2022 outdoor conference championships currently ranked fourth with a personal-best time of 52.59. 

Men
Sprinter Judson Lincoln IV is the fastest ranked freshman in the NCAA 400m sitting 19th overall with a time of 45.66. Lincoln IV ranks first in the ACC as the only athlete in the conference to run a sub-46. Lincoln is also scheduled to compete in the 4x400m relay and the 4x100m relay. The men's 4x400m relay team is placed second heading into the meet on Saturday. 

In 2021 Cole Beck became the first Hokie to win the ACC men's 100m title with a school-record time of 10.11 seconds, Beck clocked 10.18 at the 2022 outdoor championships finishing second. He currently sits sixth in the 100m within the ACC and ninth in the 200m. 

Senior Antonio Lopez Segura aims to turn his 2022 outdoor bronze medal into a gold medal this season ranked first in the ACC 10,000m clocking a school-record time of 28:09.86. 

The men's pole vault squad is fully loaded and ready to go with Hokies ranked second, third, fifth, seventh, and eighth. Jake Spotswood leads the team clearing 17' 5.25" (5.25) at the East Coast Relays on April 28. Jacob Rice is tied for third at height of 16' 10.75" (5.15m). Rounding out the squad is Harrison Rice, Conner McClure, and Joseph Badalamenti. McClure won the indoor championships clearing the bar at a height of 17' 7.75" (5.38m). 

2023 ACC indoor champion Tyson Jones is prepared to claim his third ACC title in the men's shot put. Jones won his first title at the 2021 outdoor championships putting a personal-best distance of 64' 9.75" (19.75m). At the indoor championships, he won the event putting 61' 3" (18.67m). 

Jumpers Aidan Clark and EJ Bell reached the ACC top-five finishing third at seventh at the Florida Relays in March. Clark cleared the bar at 7' 1" (2.16m) on his second attempt, while Bell jump 6' 9" (2.06m). 

The Hokies open the 2023 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at 12:00pm (noon) competing in the men's decathlon and women's pole vault.
