RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women's golf team placed fourth at the Wolfpack Match Play, posting a 1-2 record over the two-day event, which concluded Tuesday at the 6,210-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.
Tech started the competition with a statement 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals over second-seeded Florida State Monday morning. Three Hokies delivered head-to-head victories including Ginnie Lee, Becca DiNunzio and Alyssa Montgomery.
Lee shot the equivalent of a 1-under 71 against her Seminole foe, Alice Hodge to post a 2&1 decision. Once Lee got the Hokies on the board to make the score 2-1 in favor of FSU, DiNunzio and Montgomery rattled off two straight wins to bring home the victory.
DiNunzio trailed Madison Hewlett of Florida State for 12 holes before DiNunzio carded a three compared to Hewlett's five on hole 13, bringing their score to a tie. From there, DiNunzio claimed the next three holes by a single stroke to end her day with a 3&2 victory.
The deciding battle came down to Montomery vs. Amelia Williamson. The Knoxville, Tenn. native handled business, leading Williamson from hole three en route to a 3&2 result. The individual victory for Montgomery lifted Tech to the quarterfinal upset and secured the Hokies a top four finish.
Tech went on to fall to North Carolina in the semifinals Monday afternoon. The Tar Heels beat the Hokies 4-0-1 with Montgomery holding the lone tie on the course.
Tech had a tough opponent to face Tuesday as top-seeded South Carolina fell to the eventual tournament champion Duke in the semis. The Hokies couldn't best the Gamecocks, falling 4-0-1 on Tuesday. Tech's Symone Henriques was able to salvage her match, earning a tie against Mathilde Claisse.
The top four result in Raleigh is a strong mark for Carol Robertson's squad entering the all-important 2023 ACC Women's Golf Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., April 13-16.
