BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech (9-15, 3-9) got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon taking down No. 62 Clemson on Senior Day, 4-1.
On a day where the Hokies honored their two seniors, Jordan Chrysostom and Alvaro Saez-Royuela Ariza, both shined in their respective doubles matches.
The Tigers jumped ahead early, but Tech responded with Ariza and Scott Sculley reeling off five games in a row to win 6-2. Matt Harper and Frank Thompson didn't have any issues on court three with a 6-2 win of their own.
Eager to snap a four-match losing skid, the Hokies came out firing on all cylinders in singles. Thompson took care of business on court six cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Alberto Orso followed him up on court five with another straight-set drubbing, 6-2, 6-3, to put Tech within one point of clinching the match.
All eyes turned to court four where Hugo Maia looked poised to close out the match. The Braga, Portugal native pulled ahead in the second set and never looked back claiming a 7-5, 6-4, victory.
The win marks the Hokies second against a ranked opponent and third conference victory. Tech is slotted as the 11 seed in the ACC Men's Tennis Championship and will face sixth-seed Wake Forest on Thursday at 6 p.m.Gallery: (4-16-2023) MTEN: Clemson Match & Senior Day
