BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech (8-15, 2-9) was narrowly defeated by No. 65 Georgia Tech, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.
Doubles were about as tightly contest as it can get. Matt Harper and Frank Thompson put on a master class on court three with a 6-3 win to set up the deciding match on court two. Scott Sculley and Alvaro Saez-Royuela Ariza went blow for blow with their Georgia Tech challengers leading to an inevitable tiebreak set. The Hokie duo fought hard but eventually came up short as Ariza's return shot went long giving the Yellow Jackets the 1-0 lead.
Alberto Orso got the Hokies on the board early cruising to a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-0, marking his fourth singles win of the season. With Tech in desperate need of another win to keep them in the match, Frank Thompson delivered. The hometown kid made quick word of the first set and caught fire in the second set tiebreak to put the Hokies closer, 6-2, 7-6(1).
Hugo Maia finished the match on a high note with a gritty performance coming back from a 5-3 hole in the second set to win, 7-6(6), 7-6(3).
