BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 11/13 Hokies took game one of the doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Mount St. Mary's 6-5. Freshman Lyndsey Grein set a new career high in the circle, striking out 11 Mount St. Mary's hitters over seven innings of work to help lead Virginia Tech over the Mountaineers 6-5.

In addition to her 11 strikeouts, Grein (4-1) threw seven innings, giving up five runs, three earned, walking three for Virginia Tech (15-4).

At the plate, the Hokies were paced by junior Madison Hanson, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Junior Emma Ritter was solid as well with a home run and an RBI. Junior Addy Greene also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate, adding a triple and two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. Greene came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech and get them on the board of a sacrifice fly from Hanson.

The Hokies lost the lead they built in the fourth off a Mount three-run home run, but got back on the board in the fifth. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Ritter's two-out solo home run off of senior Avery Neuhart, which tightened the Mountaineers lead to 3-2.

Virginia Tech kept the Mountaineers off the scoreboard before rallying to grab a 6-3 lead in the sixth. The Hokie bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Hanson. Mount St. Mary's put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over off a home run, but Virginia Tech still held on for the 6-5 win.
