BLACKSBURG – On a crisp, sunny morning Thursday, Virginia Tech football began its spring practices, working back and forth between the Steve Johnson Practice Fields and Beamer-Lawson Practice Facility.
The team – both players and coaches – came out with an enthusiasm that defensive coordinator Chris Marve alluded to earlier in the week in a press conference, showcasing their excitement to be back out on the field competing again.
And with that enthusiasm, the offense showed a strong start, getting in and out of plays with good tempo and showing off its speed, sam linebackers/nickels coach Shawn Quinn mentioned in his post-practice media availability.
Defensively, safety Nasir Peoples pointed to that comfort level that comes with heading into the second year with the same coaching staff. Tech added two new offensive coaches (Elijah Brooks, Ron Crook), so the five coaches on the defensive side of the ball remained the same and the sixth-year safety Peoples is playing faster because of that continuity.
He also enjoyed seeing what the new kids on the block can do.
"Players-wise, we have a lot of new faces," Peoples said in Thursday's post-practice media availability. "So, it looks a little different out there, but there is an excitement to see new players play and go against the new guys."
Tech added 19 newcomers for the spring semester, with 13 of the players being on offense, five on defense and one specialist. Wide receiver was the position group with the most influx (5), while offensive line was a close second (4).
The Hokies will be back at it on Saturday for their second of 15 total practices.
Fans can see the new-look squad in action next Saturday (March 25) at 11:45 a.m. ET for an open practice at Lane Stadium.
