After its first spring ball practice, Virginia Tech football met with the media to discuss its performance to kick off the spring on Thursday.

Read below for some highlights of what was said.

Sam linebackers/nickels coach Shawn Quinn

Opening statement:
"We're now obviously in spring ball and I thought it was a really good day of spirited work. I thought, offensively, they did a really nice job. Quick tempo. The balls came out fast. I thought they looked really sharp. I was encouraged by the speed. I think we, collectively, need to play with more of a sense of urgency on and off the field. You know, some Day 1 things. I thought guys came out with really good tempo early and finishing strong, but we have the whole practice to maintain that. But we'll get into practicing in a groove as we go along."

Safety Nasir Peoples

On spring ball last year compared to this year:
"For me, personally, I feel more comfortable knowing the coaches and defense. Players-wise, we have a lot of new faces. So, it looks a little different out there, but there is an excitement to see new players play and go against the new guys."

Tight end Nick Gallo

On the offense having more speed this year and if the offensive philosophy has changed with new coaching personnel:
"Yeah, I guess. We'll see in practice here more, but we do have some fast guys. Then it's business as usual. I think all of the coaches work together. They all have the same goals and ideas. Same language. So, they're just communicating that to us and we put it into action."
