Tech opens indoor season hosting Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's and women's track teams open their indoor season on Friday, January 13, hosting the Virginia Tech Invitational in Rector Field House. The track and field events will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with the women's triple jump, pole vault, and 3000m run. Field events will pick back up on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with the women's high jump, running events will resume at 1:00 p.m. Live Results Heat Sheets

Tech swept the 2022 ACC Indoor Championships marking the first time in ACC history that a host school has won both the men's and women's championships, indoors or outdoors. The men's team claimed their second consecutive indoor title with 105 points, having won four of the last six ACC Indoor Championships. The women's team tied with Duke for first-place at the championships scoring 86 points. 

Senior Cole Beck finished first in the 200m and third in the 60m dash at the 2022 ACC Indoor Championships. Beck's 16 points at the championships earned him the title of ACC Men's Track MVP. He is scheduled to compete in the 60m dash on Friday alongside fellow teammate Kahleje "KJ" Tillmon. Tillmon and Beck claimed first place in the men's 4x100m race at the 2022 ACC Outdoor Championships. 

Senior Lindsey Butler returns to the track season looking to claim another NCAA title. In 2022, Butler ran a Birmingham CrossPlex facility record time of 2:01.37 to claim the NCAA Indoor 800m championship title. She was named the 2022 ACC Women's Track Performer of th Year after winning her second consecutive 800m indoor conference title. 

In the field, Julia Fixsen will make her back to the runway in the women's seeded pole vault event. Fixsen earned third at the NCAA Indoor Championships clearing a height of 4.46m. Senior Jacob Rice will be competing for the men's team. Rice finished fourth at the indoor conference championships clearing a personal-best height of 5.26m.  In the circle, Sara Killinen is set to compete in the women's weight throw. Killinen finished second at the ACC Indoor Championships throwing a personal-best distance of 22.21m.  

Dave Cianelli enters his 22nd indoor season as director of track and field at Virginia Tech. Under Cianelli's leadership, the Hokies have claimed 19 ACC Championships and 231 individual conference championships.
