Hokies defeat Irish, move to 2-1 in ACC play

Blacksburg -- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team (5-3, 2-1) outscored No. 15 Notre Dame 5-2 7-2 during a crucial stretch in the second half where they took the lead in the game for the first time.

How It Happened
ND scored the first four goals of the game and held a 6-2 advantage early in the second quarter before the Hokies reeled off three of their own to get a foothold in the contest. By halftime, the Irish led 8-5.

Out of the locker room, Tech scored three unanswered to tie up the game. After the Irish countered with two goals of their own, four consecutive goals scored by Sarah Lubnow (2) and Sophie Student (2) gave Tech a two-goal cushion.

In the final minutes, Whitney Liebler scored an unassisted goal with 3:24 to go and the Hokies' defense did enough to close out the 13-12 victory.

Freshman Olivia Vergano scored five points (4 G, 1 A), as did Student (4 G, 1 A). Morgan Berman made eight saves in goal.

Tech is back home on Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m. for a contest against Winthrop.
