Youssef Ramadan breaks Egyptian national record twice

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Hokies Youssef Ramadan, Carmen Weiler Sastre, Carles Coll Marti, Nico Garcia Saiz and Mario Molla Yanes made their mark at the 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup.

The Hokies traveled to Indianapolis for the final leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup in a three-day event from Nov. 3-5. Coll Marti, Garcia Saiz, Molla Yanes and Weiler Sastre were four among the seven swimmers representing their home country, Spain. Ramadan swam for his home country, Egypt, out of only four total swimmers. Hokie alumni Antani Ivanov also swam in the FINA World Cup for Bulgaria, along with another alum, Ian Ho, swimming for Hong Kong. Virginia Tech head coach, Sergio Lopez Miro, traveled with the Hokies to Indianapolis to support those swimming. 

Highlights:
 

Youssef Ramadan broke the Egyptian national record in the 50 fly early on day three with a time of 22.70 and then breaking it again later in the day, placing sixth in the finals with a time of 22.63. Ramadan also placed sixth in the men's 100 fly, finishing with a time of 50.51. 

Carles Coll Marti rocked the individual medley events. He placed fifth in the men's 200 IM with a final time of 1:54.61. He also placed eighth in the 100 IM with a time of 52.76. 

Freshman Carmen Weiler Sastre showed out in Indiana. She placed seventh in the women's 100 back with a time of 58.37 and eighth in the 200 back with a time of 2:07.32.  

Nico Garcia Saiz showed diversity in the pool, placing in the top 15 in two different events. He finished tenth in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.53 and 11th in the 400 IM with a time of 4:14.64. Mario Molla Yanes also placed in the top 15 in two events. He finished 15th in the 100 fly with a time of 51.42 and 15th in the 50 fly at 23.41.
