CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Antonio Lopez Segura ran a personal-best time of 23:15.5 in the men's 8k at the Panorama Farms XC23 Invitational on Saturday, finishing first for Virginia Tech and third overall.
Lopez Segura stayed within the top 10 throughout the entire race working his way up to third from ninth at the 2k mark. Lopez Segura shaved 79 seconds off his 8k time of 24:34.9 recorded at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Sept. 16. The Hokies men finished eighth with 194 points.
Freshman Declan Rymer scored 37th with a personal-best time of 24:05.7, followed by Alec Fleming scoring 44th with a personal-best time of 24:16.0. Adding to the Hokies' score, Dave Whitfield (24:22.6) scored 53rd and Ethan Mills (24:29.9) scored 57th in a field of 184 men.
Ava Hassebrock, Cheyenne Leatham, and Lindsey Butler finished within the top 25 for the Hokies leading the women's team to a fourth-place finish with 146 points. Hassebrock ran a personal-best time of 17:16.6 in the women's 5k finishing 18th. Following closely behind, Leatham finished 19th with a time of 17:17.6 and Butler placed 21st with a time of 17:21.9. Rounding out the team's score, Grace Boone placed 30th with a time of 17:33.5, and Hannah Ballowe scored 58th with a personal-best time of 17:55.0.
The Hokies return to Charlottesville on Friday, Oct. 28 to compete at the ACC Championships. In 2021, the Virginia Tech women placed seventh with 219 points and the men placed ninth with 273 points at the Burke Cross Country Course in South Bend, Ind.
